Bunions

Bunion surgery can be performed  as an outpatient, this means you will be able to go home the after the procedure. Some patients will be under general anaesthesia during the operation, so the patient will be asleep. Other patients will have the surgery under local anaesthesia. When having the procedure under a local anaesthesia, it will completely block any pain, and the patient will be able to stay awake during the operation. The patient may be given a light sedative with the local anaesthetic to help relax the patient.   Bunion Surgery usually takes an hour, this will depend on the size of the bunion and damaged area. The surgeon will make an incision on the inner side of the foot, over the big toe joint. This technique will be performed making small incisions rather than big ones. This is called keyhole surgery.  Keyhole surgery will depend on the type and size of the bunion. Usually the practioner will remove some bone, and may reposition the ligaments and tendons within the foot. The surgeon will then use  screws, staples or wires  to keep the bones in place.
